The Rape of Proserpina – Gian Lorenzo Bernini – 1622 – Galleria Borghese, Rome

The sculptor knew
What it looks like…
Her flesh giving
As he holds her
True to life…
And is that not
What he seeks?
Art’s about beauty
But yet also truth…
How a master
Finds the feel
Of flesh in marble
Escaped him…
But the master
Proves it can be

Thank you, Suzanne. It was about knowing my limitations. I never took hammer and chisel to marble, preferring to construct or model in clay, but who can’t appreciate the skill and vision of those who mastered it…and Bernini is at the top of those sculptors. Obviously, I don’t see sculpture as what you trip over as you back up to see the paintings, as someone once described it. 😛

Robert … very well done … this prompt seems to have people shying away today!

Thank you, Annie. People avoiding the prompt may be a consequence of the poor availability of art training and sometimes inferior quality of the same. People don’t understand art, due to lack of exposure. So many artists are still starving artists…probably most would be, but for other jobs.
